Kratie Town

Kratie Town is the provincial capital, about 40,000 people live here. It’s a working town: it’s easier to buy agricultural machinery than a pair of shoes! This is, though, part of the charm and strength of Cambodia. Each shop is an individual, family business, not a multinational chain.

Centre of town is the market and the Pagoda, one street east from the Mekong river promenade that fills up with people after sunset. There are a number of festivals throughout the year that attract thousands of visitors from outside and the people spread their mats out along the promenade for their family evening meal.

For western tourists there is only a limited selection of restaurants, but for lovers of Khmer food there are very many options, from street vendors to large restaurants.

Typical for rural Cambodia, Kratie wakes early – at around 05:00 – and sleeps early. You won’t find much open after 22:00. We recommend a visit to the morning (05:00 – 07:00) fish market at the northern end of the promenade, by the ferry boat station. You will be surprised by what comes out of the nets every day!

With the opening of the new bridge in April 2026, combined with a road upgrading program, the Cambodian government is taking steps to increase the economic potential of the town and the region. Much will change in the coming decade.

We are 1.8km from Kratie Town centre.
