Our Village
Rokakandal is a village ‘in the water’. To the west the Mekong river, to the east the flood plain, much wider than the river itself. Many of our guests are unaware of the big lake to the east, and we recommend everyone to take a walk, a bicycle or moto ride, or a tuk-tuk to take a look. You will find rice paddies and the kind of south-eastern Asian landscapes that have remained constant for thousands of years, nourishing the communities around them.
It’s not surprising to learn that many people here live from fishing. Fish protein has sustained the Mekong communities for millennia: there’s nets, there’s traps and there’s farming. And, there’s a multitude of techniques for preserving the catch: drying, pickling, fermenting and smoking give rise to some of Cambodia’s most iconic flavours and aromas.
